Photography Page

Personal branding

Project goal:

My clients often ask me to show some of my works before they're ready to book me. Having a page with all my photos separated by style is a very convenient way of saving their and my time.

Research

Understanding the users

Do I want to show off my skills to employers or clients?

When I thought of possible people that might be interested in this page I quickly realized that I don't really need to dive deep. I've had multiple occasions when my clients asked me for my portfolio, for which I had to send them link on my Instagram or Google Photos. And that wasn't really a good representation of me as a professional.

The other half of interested people would be recruiters. And I hope some of you actually are reading this right now.

Ideation

I had some ideas about what this page would look like with an existing website. Mainly because the website already had its own style with card pages. I wanted to follow the same styling for the photography page to keep the entire website's consistency.

After I finished iterating on possible designs for the photography page card selection, I started making layouts for the subgroups. The first thing that came to mind was the Pinterest layout. Their approach to combining different-sized images is by far (in my opinion) the best way of showing multiple images, so I tried to make something similar.

At this point in developing my website, it was easier to build the pages in Webflow because I was already familiar with the interface and knew exactly what I want to see from the final page. Also, it made it easier to run usability studies to check how the interface works on different devices with very different resolutions.
Results and takeaways

Creating responsive websites is one of the skills that every UX designer should have with the latest mobile usage statistics. While making this page I learned that there are 6.5 billion smartphone users in the world today. Which means that 83.72% of the world's population own a smartphone. It's extremely important to have as much experience as possible in designing across devices for me as an entry-level designer.

I learned more about possibilities of HTML and CSS while making this website in general, and especially designing this photography page. This was the first time I used a custom CSS code to make my grid of photos responsive and nice looking. Although, I discovered later the way I could do it without a custom code but now I know where to find custom codes, how to edit them without breaking everything, and successfully implement them into website building.
