Main Trust Bank

Google Design Course project

Project goal:

A lot of people in small towns are frustrated with their local banking. Some don't even have the option to open an account online. I need to design a sign-up process for a local bank.

Research

Understanding the users

Who opens accounts in local banks?

I live in a small town myself and know how frustrating it is sometimes to deal with your local banks. Thankfully, for this research I was able to gather opinions from people that live here as well which made my initial research easier than it could be. At least, so I thought at first. I conducted about 6 interviews with people of different age to set my first wireframes for further testing.

But I couldn't carry the whole project on 6 interviews, so I started digging deeper. That led me to some third party researches. Thanks to those researches (mainly https://www.fdic.gov/) I changed the idea of a mobile app first approach to an actual website on an early stage of wireframing.

The conducted research made it clear that the biggest part of the users (about 60% which was double the amount of what I thought at the beginning) were middle to old (50+) age working adults who would want to change their bank . That made the initial assumption of the core users being young adults that are more familiar with technologies not relevant.

Creating a desktop version became the most important part during the design as it would cover the most users I’ve determined through the research.

Ideation

Brainstorming Wireframes
No items found.

During that part of the course, we weren't given much time to finish wireframes, so I skipped paper wireframes and made digital ones from the beginning. The main idea was to make the users feel like they already know how to use the website and how to create an account.

Ideating on wireframes in XD was a very nice idea as I finished wireframing faster. In addition, because of that, I had an early base to continue my research with some potential users.

Design

Digital Wireframes

I conducted 4 interviews to figure out if the layout is reminding them of any particular website. Overall people quickly realized it was the design of a bank website. Some responses included PNC and Bank of America which I was hoping for. These results gave me enough confidence to start working on the high-fidelity prototype.
Mockups

I conducted new interviews and usability studies on the digital wireframes with people of different age groups (18-64 years old). The main idea became to use minimum colors and minimum pages, so the users won't feel lost on the page.
Results and takeaways

Bringing the big banks experience for those people is a substantial task for local banks.

I learned how to use third party research in your own UX/UI design and how beneficial it is sometimes to know opinions of people that might not live in the same city as you.

Bank services are known to be complicated and stressful for a lot of people because of their complexity and overwhelming available services. Through third party researches I've learned that a lot of people don't trust local banks because of their reputation. Erasing the visual difference between the local bank and bigger banks and making it minimalistic, so more people are able to open a new account.
