My task was to create a poster that could be uploaded to Instagram without losing any text on it, so it could be easily promoted. Originally poster were supposed to be printed as well but sponsors decided to skip on this step for now.
Choosing the right layout
The original poster was only being promoted via VK (Russian equivalent of Facebook) and Facebook, so it didn't need to be Instagram aspect ratio. Creating images with 4:5 aspect ratio is a challenge for posters because of all the extra information you need to put on one picture, so I decided from the beginning to have white space around the main figures of the images of about 200-400px.
Another challenge was to make it at least remotely similar to works of Hieronymus Bosch. This wasn't necessary but would greatly benefit the overall integrity of the exhibition.
Concept VR scene
Bosch is known for a very bizarre and detailed style which would be very hard to recreate, so I offered to use as reference his work Tondal's Vision which is centered on the head and could be a perfect way to attract viewers eyes.
After reaffirming the details with the organization team I started working on 3D scenes for the posters. YOLO team didn't want to copy the style of Bosch completely, so in this way I had more or less freedom of interpreting the poster design.
Some of the scenes I created were used with a different angle and frame in the end. Although I had scrap a few of them because the team didn't want to have more than one figure on the posters.
Finishing the posters
The original layout with desired typography I received from the organization team looked a little... Let's say abstract. I digitalized it to make quick changes on the go.
With these wireframes I proceeded to make 3D pictures look like actual posters.
I didn't like the way these posters turned out mainly because of the typography, so I proceeded to convince the team to try something different. My idea was to leave the key elements but rearrange them and change the typefaces of the text to make it more easily scannable and readable.
The final results pleased everyone in the team and the posters were released to the social media and some of them are planning to be printed soon for the winter season.
